Here’s Why It Pays to Participate in My Squidoo Contests…

Our last Squidoo contest was a Monkeybrain one. Kyle Richey won it and as promised, we (myself and Lewis Smile) built Kyle a lens on Squidoo as a reward!

Wanna see it?

It’s amazing if I do say so myself. Now I do the writing and initial lens set-up, but Lewis sure does make it WOW you:

I love logging into a lens after Lewis puts the finishing touches on it (including all the behind-the-scenes magic he does to help it perform well) and just being in awe of how it looks…content aside. The images pop, the format just works well, and I get jealous that it’s not my lens!

Enjoy your reward, Kyle! And everyone go show Kyle some star love for his hard work in winning the Monkeybrain contest.

Big Prize for Winner of the March Squidoo Contest

Just got some good news from my friend Bob the Teacher who runs the other Squidoo site everyone’s buzzing about here: http://www.tiffanydow.com/SquidooSecrets.html.

He agreed to supply the prize for this challenge by giving the winner a free Super Kraken Membership (a $147 value).  And if you already happento have a membership, then he’ll give you a free Extreme Lens Makeover, taking your lens and optimizing it for maximum performance - OR, you can have a $100 gift certificate from one of his other sites (www.discoverminisites.com, www.heartoread.net, www.freeadreport.com, www.teachersinbusiness.com).

Of course, if you don’t already own my Squidoo eBook, located at http://www.socialmarketing101.com, then you will
also receive a free copy of that and a copy of my eBook called Building an eBook Empire, which hasn’t launched yet.

You have a few days until the start of the challenge, so be getting your ideas ready and setting up some feeder lenses.
The only thing you can’t set up ahead of time is the actual contest lens.

Looking forward to competing against everyone!

Preliminary Contest Tips

Last time I was strict about not being able to use any existing lenses to drive traffic to your challenge lens. Well this time, feel free to d some preliminary work and set up feeder lenses before your primary lens is created. It’s no different than if you posted a link from an existing website in your niche.

Right now, I am developing ideas and mapping out a plan of attack to help me win the challenge.  I think with any business strategy, you need to have a blueprint in place - it’s not best to fly by the seat of your pants. With this contest timeline cut in half, it’s even more imperative that you have everything in place to help you catapult your lens to the top of the ranks.

PS - Although he’s a competitor of mine in the Squidoo niche, I can highly recommend Squidoo Secrets by Bob the Teacher.  His stuff complements mine, so you learn a lot. He’s one of the few people I stay on the list for because the tips are great.

March 2007 Squidoo Challenge

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

The March Squidoo Challenge is soon to be in session.  It’s baaaaack! Want to test your skills against other LensMasters and see how well you can rise in the ranks of Squidoo and in the Google SERPs?

This time, we’re throwing all rules out the window. I want to let chaos reign to see just how far we can manipulate the system to work for us. Your lens can be about butterflies or backend product tips – anything goes!

You can link from existing lenses, you can put it in any category you want, switch it up midstream, focus on any keyword or phrase, and in the end – the one coming out highest in overall LensRank at the end of 15 days wins. Everyone thought 30 days was too long last time, so you’ll need to work hard for a shorter period of time.

The only requirement is that the lens has to be created new from scratch and you can’t start creating March 16th.  This gives everyone a level playing field to start.  Whoever ranks highest when I check the stats on March 31st wins!

This time, I’ll only accept participants who sign up on the opt in list (over there on the left side of this blog). It’s far more trouble for me to send the list an email and then also send direct emails out. This list isn’t used for pedaling products – it’s a contest only list so I can blast a single update out at a time.

Once you’re opted in to the contest list, wait until the start time for the challenge and start building your lens. Then go to the challenge forum at http://www.socialmarketing101.com/Forum and there is a March Challenge sticky thread under the Monthly Squidoo Challenge folder where you will post your name and lens URL. Remember not to create your lens until the start date because existing lenses won’t be eligible.

This is what I’ll use to keep track of the participants, so make sure you add yours to the list.  The reason for this is because there are some people watching the challenge from the opt in list who aren’t actually participating, but just watching and learning.

If you want to find out some great tips from past contestants, then download a copy of the Squidoo Cheat Sheet here: http://www.tiffanydow.com/CheatSheet.html. It’s a compilation of what myself, Kevin Davis, and David McGraw learned in the January-February challenge.

Enjoy!

Peer-to-Peer Squidoo Q&A

I’m fielding a lot of questions from many of you who are jealously admiring other challengers’ lenses so I thought it would be a good idea to open up a Q&A between contestants. For instance, Bruce - others are admiring your Plexo module. “How’d he do that?” they ask me.

You guys and girls can ask and answer questions to one another in the comments section here. Unless, of course, you want to keep your secrets all to yourself.

Questions and Answers About the Squidoo Challenge

Hi everyone!

I’ve had some questions about the Challenge, so I’ll address them here. Time zone translates like this: 12:00:00 Noon Saturday January 13, 2007 in US/Central converts to 06:00:00 p.m. Saturday January 13, 2007 in GMT.

Others asked:

1. Do I need to create a new squidoo account or is it ok to use my existing one? You can use your existing account, but the only rule is that you DO NOT link to your new lens from your existing lenses. You can create new lenses to interlink, though.

2. As long as my lens is about affiliate marketing I can call it whatever and post whatever I want right? The only rules are that it has to be in the business category and the primary tag has to be affiliate marketing. Whether you actually post about it is up to you, I guess! :)

3. Can we tweak our lenses during the 30 days? You’d better, or else you’ll lose! You need to promote it everywhere and update it, etc. Do what you can to win, but follow the rules.

4. Can we promote it in SquidU?  Yep. Just not from an existing lens. Anywhere else is fair game.

I’ll address all Questions in this post and update it as they’re asked.

Rules for the Squidoo Challenge

First, thanks to Keith Boisvert from www.outlaw-fx.com for helping me get this contest figured out with the rules and regulations. I’ve given him the official co-host badge, so he’s another go-to person if you have questions.

Also special thanks to my friend Craig Desorcy from www.WeHelpNewbies.com for helping me get the blog going and my opt-in form set up, etc. He’s a genius and I’m proud to have him as a friend.

Now, down to business.  Here’s what we’ve come up with so far and I’d like your input on what you think about it, so feel free to add comments to the blog and we can iron out the details before an official rule sheet is sent out to the participants:

The keyword phrase will be “affiliate marketing.” We chose this broad phrase for two reasons. First, we have participants on the newbie end of the spectrum and this is a topic they can easily learn about and handle.

Second, using this term ideally gives us all the opportunity to really monetize our lenses with product sales. (Always have to think like a marketer, right)? And after the 30 days, we will all have an income-producing lens to maintain.

When you create your contest lens, you MUST put it in the business section and use the primary tag as “affiliate marketing,” but your secondary tags can be whatever you want.

You will not be able to create your lens until Saturday at 12 noon Central Standard time (Texas time).  Any lenses creates or registered before that time will be disqualified. Don’t even reserve the lens on the URL because you’ll automatically begin rising in LensRank, which will not be fair.

You cannot link to your contest lens from pre-existing lenses, but you CAN create new lenses that are not your contest lens and point those to the challenge lens. You can also direct traffic from anywhere else on the web to your contest lens, including your websites, your lists, your forum signatures, etc.

The reason for this is that if someone like myself, who already has a lot of Squidoo traffic, directs visitors to my contest lens from my top existing lens, I’ll have a distinct advantage over you.

The top winner will be whichever of us has the highest LensRank by Noon on February 12th, exactly 30 days later.  We’ll also give an honorable mention to the person who achieves highest ranking for the phrase “affiliate marketing” on Squidoo, and also for whomever gets highest in the Business category.

Sign-ups will continue until Saturday at 11 AM Texas Central time. You can sign up here. Make sure you include your email address that you want to be notified at.

If you have any additional questions, ask them so we know what the rules are asap.

Thanks! I’m looking forward to battling as long as we “hug it out” at the end.

Tiff :)
