He Said WHAT About Squidoo?
I love it when another blogger pipes up with a slam against Squidoo - my inbox fills with emails from people going, “Did you hear what so-and-so said about Squidoo? What are your thoughts?” It’s like a fight on the playground - people want to see a battle. Last time, someone came right out and said it - he wanted to see two marketers arguing over the point. LOL (Hey at least he was honest).
So today or yesterday another marketer came out with an anti-Squidoo blog post. I won’t name names here. Why spread false information and help him with more branding? But here’s what I want to say about this (or any topic where you have a he said, she said):
It’s okay to have differing opinions!
I think people get their undies in a bunch because another person’s slam could impact one person’s sales (ie: My Squidoo eBook). But I’m not really worried about it unless it’s true, which most of these aren’t.
In this recent instance, the purpose of the blog post was very obvious - throughout the post, the author had linked to a few article marketing products and stated that he has a new tool coming out for article marketing - hence his reason to post a blog entry slamming Squidoo and saying article marketing is where you should be wasting (er, spending) your time. Just teasing - I use both!
From a marketing standpoint, what he did was very wise. Many people are asking questions about “article marketing versus Squidoo,” so he capitalized on the issue by posting it to his blog - it’s very SEO savvy of him. Since he doesn’t have an eBook about Squidoo but does promote article marketing products, what do you THINK his opinion will be of a this versus that comparison?
Others asked if he’d ever actually USED Squidoo and he said he had, but it was overrated, etc. Well last time this happened with another marketer, where I actually got dragged into the argument, I went and checked out the other marketer’s lenses and WOW they were bad - no wonder his efforts tanked!
That’s why the old saying, “opinions are assholes - everyone has one,” is so true in these cases. One person’s efforts will not be identical to yours. When you read a post (hell even one of mine!) that says “this sucks,” ask yourself if it really sucks or if the author’s efforts sucked. Ask yourself if there’s a motive for the post.
For example, I told the person who owns the Squidoo Queen domain that I made a blog post specifically about who the REAL Squidoo Queen was simply because there’s a lot of searches out there for Squidoo Queen and I was being SEO savvy about it - pulling in my fair share of the traffic. Look how that worked for me - that ONE blog post is ranked #5 on Google when you type in Squidoo Queen in Google.
I’m no dummy!
Neither is this blogger currently bashing Squidoo. Take it with a grain of salt, y’all. Make your own conclusions after YOU give it a try.

Squidoo may not work for that marketer, but it’s certainly working for you, Tiff.
Maybe he needs to buy your Squidoo ebook and learn from someone who’s mastered the art of lens crafting. You go girl!

I like your observations. Personally, I really think it does come down to the quality of what you put out there for the SEO public to see. I push my web design clients, e-commerce clients and partners to write good articles that actually have meaningful content and SEO appeal. I try like hell to put up strong lenses with unique content that will appeal to people and have SEO appeal. If you write crap articles or design crap lenses why even bother? It’s not like you’ll get very far.

Great article, Tiffany, this is why I follow you on twitter ( @jantallent )
and pore over your posts and articles. You check things out before you comment and use a sensible and often entertaining approach to state your views and opinions and obviously what works for one is not going to work for ALL and it might just be something the user is doing or NOT that makes it not work for him or her.
your fan,
Jan

Squidoo is really no different than any other website, if it is designed well and is customized to a buying niche then it will be profitable. Not all lenses are about making money though and I think that is where so many people go wrong when slamming Squidoo.
Even if used for business a lens is free and only takes 15 minutes to put together once you know the ropes so why wouldn’t a smart marketer want to use Squidoo?
January 20th, 2009 11:45 pm
Excellent post Tiffany. Everyone’s always got an angle.
Re Squidoo and article marketing, I use both, why not? Squidoo’s free, and it’s a way to get into Google fast, even without a Web site.
I’ve watched several people develop full-time incomes just using Squidoo with article marketing; it’s a great way to get started online.

You hit the nail right on the head Tiff. I got the email from the author yesterday and read the blog post. The blog author in question has always done very well with SEO and article marketing, so I do agree that there was a definite method to his madness. He has created a “buzz” that’s for sure.

Well I did not read the other article so I can’t comment, but my opinion is that there is room for both. Squidoo is jsut one part of the puzzle when it comes to marketing online. I’ve had some success, probably similar to the amount of work I’ve put in which is not very uch. I’m guessing a lot of people don’t really realize the true power of squidoo. While you may not make a sale from your lense everyday( although some people do), but you still have a decent piece of property. I’ve got lenses that I created and never really touched again on a variety of subjects. Guess what they all have decent page rank. A simple edit and link from one of these lenses will get any page I want spidered by Google in just a few minutes.

I think you need to handle Squidoo with care. You get out of it what you put in. Putting together some crappy lenses just to make a couple of affiliate sales ain’t gonna cut it.
January 21st, 2009 1:18 am
I have a couple lenses and they probably suck because I can’t put my feelings into words very well.
How would a person like me make any money from squidoo?
Can anyone help?

Yes Tif, Squidoo Gather and Facebook have strange things in them, and all of these sites are working to fix things and make them better. People want to let off steam thinking they worked hard to make money. Its only internet, not Wall street or even big banking. Squidoo is just starting out the programs will be much better in a few years, If Seth will not install writing programs to check and improve mistakes tiny word faults and even via voice to just talk in your lens. Anything can be done and its their baby. The true pleasure to me is watching the thing grow and seeing such kind wonderful sharing people making the Earth a better place to live. Money for poor and sick people, that is the true wonder, not what some person can stick in their pocket. Squidoo is a cause and a way to help. So God bless Seth and his crew of fine and caring people they bring tears to my eyes when their news is sent out about the improvement of servers and the new people coming in to share life story’s Gods hand has been reached out to us and we should take it and walk in the Garden with him for Glory surrounds these people, and blessings will flow from the pages as people work to make lives better, and share the love they have of their work in every day life. For me everyone on Squidoo is a God send and a good friend to be had. So you need to be blessed and look past the sad person who did not fill his pockets as Squidoo has more than I had ever dreamed could be put on line.

Tiff hope you were having luck with the Hub pages as well.
January 21st, 2009 2:44 am
Hey Tiff,
Yeah, Jennifer (PotPieGirl) had a good time arguing with him.
We both have had far too much success from Squidoo to let someone bash on it, so I guess we played into the whole “he said, she said” nonsense a bit, but it was fun while it lasted.
Anyway, thanks for always providing a great perspective on things.
Take care,
Kyle

Wow Tiffany, this is why you get the big bucks! I’ve noticed something I think is cool caus I like Psychology..(what makes people do what they do etc). And that is this….
It seems like that one very good way to learn some Psychology is to study and learn as much as possible about internet marketing. Eventually, when you get deep enough into “Marketing” skills, it all seems kinda like this… you get your site, get your product, get your traffic (using all your super Ninja, high tech tricks). COOL, GREAT! But guess what?,… at the end of the day, it ALL boils down to ONE thing, “What does it take to get inside your ‘Visitors’ minds to make them, no,..Persuade them to become ‘Buyers’ !!” And there are a TON MORE of those super ninja, Mostly Ancient Low Tech, tricks to accomplish That! (Cool!)
Does this sound about right so far Tif? Be honest if I’m off track! I can take it.
Point being, Tiffany has displayed her extreme knowledge and ability in this kind of Psychological skills! (can you tell I’m a big fan of hers?).
Don’t let me get started on Tiffany, I might not stop. So, Now I’ll stop.
Gary from TN.
P.S. The way I always heard the “Opinion/Butt hole” crack (PUN INTENDED LOL!), was like this. “You know what they say about Opinions. Everybody has one, and they ALL STINK!” bahahahah hehehe and lol too! (sorry)

Hi Doug!
You said you can’t put your feelings into words very well…if it’s a Squidoo lens for marketing purposes, you’re going to be solving a problem, whether it’s how to make money, how to build a dollhouse, or whatever.
So think about questions your customer is asking - I use Google keyword tools for this - and use those as your titles for lenses.
Write like you’re answering an email from someone you know - casual, reassuring, and confident. If you get stuck, go with the trusted Who, What, When, Where, Why (or how).
If you want to shoot me a link to one of your lenses, I’ll be able to give more solid advice.

Tiff
Good post and well called!
I read that other post and indeed responded to it a number of times.
You are right it was obvious that the blogger in question had their own agenda and was promoting their own product. Sadly when that’s what is going on veracity becomes the victim! I think I can say that I have had a little experience with Squidoo and what was being said in the original post and in many of the responses was plain inaccurate.
If you position yourself as a Coach (something I have a lot of experience of because I do it professionally!) then you have a responsibility to provide advice and guidance which is in the best interests of your coachees. Not advice which gets them to buy your latest little product.
Take care
Paul

Hi Tiff,
That’s a great post and a very valuable insight into ‘How to get others to stand up and take notice’.
I haven’t read the marketers blog in question, but it seems to me all he is doing is a very clever marketing ploy. I bet his traffic, more importantly, targeted traffic increased exponentially and probably resulted in a few more sales.

I think it just depends on a lot of things: effort, points of view, which particular marketing strategy works best for you, etc. I’ve done well at Squidoo, and while I really enjoy it, article marketing has done a lot better for me, but I use a combination of both because that’s what works for me, my niches, and my style. I’m sure there’s pros and cons to either method, and as always, it depends what your definition of “overrated” is.

Hi Tiff,
I just love your style of writing and imagine if we ever had a conversation that it would be exactly the same way that you speak.
I agree completely with your point about someone’s opinion of whether or not something works and what may be the underlying goal of theirs in denouncing another’s techniques or products is something we should all be aware of.
Thanks,
Chris

Thank goodness for you! It’s horses for courses with all these social tools. I was talking with a client just this morning about Twitterers who never actually have a conversation, their stream is made up of Tweets which read “New blog post + shorturl”. I’m not going to click on that link if I don’t know what its about so I dont tend to follow those people. Now I could stand on a soapbox and say that strategy is WRONG but I don’t. Many of them have way more followers than I do - not that that means Twitter is working for them necessarily, but I am a believer in the Universal Law of Attraction ie. like attracts like. What doesnt work for me may work brilliantly for others and vice versa.
Really enjoying your emails Tiff.
Warmest
Claire
PS. Will be unashamedly stealing your phrase “get their undies in a bunch” - love it!

Tiffany, Thanks for all your knowledge which you give unselfishly. I am now in a love hate relationship with Squidoo. I realize my subject is a difficult one. There are many of us doing genealogy, but I put everything you really need to get started in genealogy on my lenses. Sales: 0 which is all right, but Squidoo doesn’t like them. Clouda9 even helped me change them. Squidoo still doesn’t like them. I am not stupid, have a college degree that I supported myself with, but I just can’t get the hang of it. Maybe, If I buy your book? Would you please look at my lenses and give your opinion? Thanks. jooloo
January 23rd, 2009 12:35 pm
Hey Jooloo yes I can take a peek - post your URLs for me. The one in your name title isn’t working. Squidoo might be down though.
January 24th, 2009 10:27 am
jooloo’s lenses: http://www.squidoo.com/basicgenealogy is the main one and two more are linked to that, http://www.squidoo.com/freegenealogywebsites & http://www.squidoo.com/freegenealogywebsites AND http://www.squidoo.com/pegbracken
Thanks for any help.
